The Great Italian Wine Auction
The Great Italian Wine Auction, organized by the Associazione Volontari per il diritto allo studio all’Università di Scienze Gastronomiche, is a fundraising and educational event in support of ongoing studies in gastronomy. Auction proceeds will go towards creating a series of scholarships for students from developing nations, further reinforcing the university’s mission.
At the core of both this unique event and the university itself is a belief in merging educational and social understanding, and of bringing students of all ages together within a real-world context of food and wine production.
Since its founding, the University of Gastronomic Sciences has benefited from the exceptional support of Italian winemakers, a tradition that continues with the Great Italian Wine Auction. It is in large part thanks to this relationship that the university is today recognized as a center of oenogastronomic learning around the world.
The Auction, Online and Off
The auction consists of sales of en primeur wines (wine futures) from 200 top Italian winemakers. Open bidding was launched online September 24, 2007, and closes over a series of sequential deadlines leading up to a live event the following spring. Lots consist of mixed 2009 releases from wineries throughout Italy, with bidding on the first series (50 lots) closing on December 20, 2007. The second and third series (75 lots each) close on February 15 and April 15, 2008, respectively. The auction culminates at the end of April 2008 with live bidding on 120 lots during a gala event at the Agenzia di Pollenzo.
Simultaneous real-time events are planned at distinctive locations in London, Moscow, and New York.
